I would say its a mixture of fantasy and history (fantahistory?), but remember that its based on Frank Miller's 300 not on the battle of thermopylae per se. Even so i think its fairly accurate. Nonetheless, i cant help but see the modern parallels, albeit unintentional.
Truly worth the wait. Spartans ARE the finest soldiers the world has ever known.

As expected, the Iranians were pretty pissed off about the film. Although I don't think they intended to piss them off. Honestly, I respect them as people, if only I didn't get this negative war-like feedback I always get whenever I see their d**ned parades at the capital.

The thing is then the Iranians would have problems with Frank Miller as well. I see that so much of the films criticism can be more directly applied to Frank Miller's work but people just see the movie and then they're pissed at the movie. For example, I read a review that some guy was pissed about the historical inaccuracies, but thats because they expected the movie to be based of history. They don't realize the movie is based of a graphic novel which is loosely based on a historical event.
Though I can see why the Iranians are pissed. The film (and graphic novel for that matter) does portray the Persians in a bad light.

But if anything I don't think the Iranians today are like the Persians of yesteryear. The Persians were the dominant superpower of their day, not like present Iran.

It was a really good movie. Indeed, I can say that I can never be as great a soldier as a Spartan ever was. But then that's really not my fault is it. Society has changed over the centuries and Spartan values and traditions just wouldn't work today. I doubt we'll see their likes again.

Unless you have a Spartan program similar to the one in Halo.

Well I don't think the Iranians or any other Islamic people would like their ancestors being portrayed as debaucherous, deformed, homosexuals and monsters (nothing against homosexuals but the ones in the movie were certainly ugly) with tons of piercings. That sort of behavior certainly goes against everything they believe in now.

Well there were some pretty messed up people on the Greek's side too, just look at the priests that were "consulting" the oracle. Not to mention the dominant politician turned traitor.

Plus that hunchback guy that betrated the Spartans also. But then I suppose the temptation was irresistable with all those hookers around him.
