Just wanted to give some of you guys some advice. If any of you have Rome: Total War be sure to the download the Rome Total Realism mod. Towne lent me RTW recently so I decided to check this mod out and unfortunately I'm now hopelessly addicted. If any of you do decide to install it go ahead and read the instructions in this link to do so: forums.totalrealism.net/index.php?s=7dfc7d69c020ffdbee9edcdc7b164f18&showtopic=22755. And this link here is for Rob Towne : forums.totalrealism.net/index.php?showtopic=17647, in it someone shows off their attempt to conquer all of Gaul in the manner of Julius Caesar and he actually came pretty close by the way. Even if you don't want to go through all 7 pages of his commentary be sure to at least check out his final entry where he ends it with a massive/epic battle. Finally, some screenshots:

Does it have the early imperial era legionaries in it? If it does, too bad you couldn't have used it for Legiones Redde, but it was a cool movie anyway.

Rome Total War is one of my favorite PC games. Looking at these screenshots, I'll be sure to try it out.

Does it have the early imperial era legionaries in it? If it does, too bad you couldn't have used it for Legiones Redde, but it was a cool movie anyway. At the start of a campaign you begin with republican era hastati, principes, and triarri infantry, but once you hit the Marius reforms you receive late republican/early imperial legionary cohorts. I'd say it'd be somewhat accurate up to the time that our film covers. However we have to remember that the reforms were enacted about a century before the Teutoburg forest incident. I'll try to update this post soon with info on the legions dating pre-Marius and post-Marius reforms (and oh yes, pics will be included). Update: This is what Roman infantry would've looked like during the Republic when they fought Hannibal during the Punic Wars, subjugated Spain and southern Gaul, and reduced Greece to a protectorate. The men tossing the javelins are Principes and the men with the spears are triarri. Both Hastati and Principes tossed javelins before they actually fought in hand to hand combat. These next guys are exactly what the units look like in Rome Total Realism pre-Marius reforms, except the Hastati units as represented by the guy in the rear has feathers on his helmet. "A legionary of the late Roman republic. His armour is light chain mail, and his shield, though curved, is not yet the famous square shield of later days." Basically, these were the types of troops Julius Caesar led through his campaigns. And this link provides great photos showing how the Roman legionary evolved through Roman history, although I believe some things are slightly inaccurate such as the fact that the Caesar's Legions pic shows rectangular shields when it's believed they still had the oval ones, but still, nice paintings: www.lastsquare.com/PrintCatalog/aeroart.html

Wow that was cool. Thanks 4 posting the link of that guy's story. Wow, being outnumbered 4 to 1 against the britons and still being able to kick their butt. At least they arrived at different times because it would be hard to fight them all at the same time.
Man, I want to play this now. The graphics look sweet, as I can see they put more detail into the sky, and the troop skins. The Gauls also look cool as well.

Ah, the RTR mod. I've played that mod before and I loved it! I wish they could have made the real game like that, though its up to the game designers. Right now I'm playing some LOTR mod though

I just got Rome Total War a few months back after I saw Legiones Redde and I thought that game looked cool, but this mod looks even better, did they add any more units or factions? Does it support multiplayer, and if it does, anybody play RTR online?

That's the best version of Rome Total War there is. I played the regular version, but I was dissapointed with the whole family thing. There were no Julii, Scipii, or Brutii. I know it was like that to simulate the civil war, but there were other ways they could have done it (like the rebellions in Barbarian Invasion).

I just got Rome Total War a few months back after I saw Legiones Redde and I thought that game looked cool, but this mod looks even better, did they add any more units or factions? Does it support multiplayer, and if it does, anybody play RTR online? As a matter of fact there are A LOT of new units in RTR. There's so many countless units now that it took me like 30 to 45 minutes to list and explain them all over the phone in a conversation with Rob. For instance, I just started a new campaign as Seleucia just for the hell of it and I was surprised to find out that I could hire mercenary Galatian swordsmen!! And now when you conquer cities from another nation you can recruit some of their units or derivatives of them, for example the Romans can recruit Gallic Auxilia. As for the factions, yes, there's new factions, but they replace some of the olds ones which I am fine with by the way. Examples of some of the new factions include Ptolemaic Empire, Illyrians, Bactria, Sarmatians, and a couple others. And one more thing, there is online multiplayer and all you need to do in order to play it is to downloaded and install the necessary patches. I'm sure you and Robert could probably set up a game but I'm borrowing his copy and I can't exactly play due to this computer lacking some good hardware. However, if you have the Barbarian Invasion expansion you can play him with that.

Yeah, if you ever see a "Revenge of Varus" or "DarthBob_2005" online, know that you're playing alongside Arminius in the flesh, heh heh. Doesn't neccesarily mean you would win or loose, but I do have kind of a good record. 34-13-1. (The tie or "draw" btw was when some fool decided to quit rather than face defeat. I still kicked his butt anyway, so it should be 35-13).

RTR rocks! Its the best mod for Rome Total War period, the true Rome Total War. As for multiplayer there is a bug in 5.4.1 RTR but it was fixed for 6.0
