Okay, I know that there really was a Beowulf in real life, but then how did the Grendel thing come about? Who was or what was the real Grendel?
Post any theories or info you might have

I have no idea. Back then they were always making stuff up. They made up stuff about elves, trolls, dragons, and all sorts of stuff like that. Yet it is true that many of those heroes, including Beowulf, once existed.
Maybe Grendel was some spy from another kingdom trying to get revenge for whatever reason. Maybe his wife followed him, and she ended up being known as Grendel's mother. But then how do you explain the lake thing?
Hmmm, very good question Lord Revan.

If Grendel was an alien, then why didn't more aliens come to attack after Grendel was killed. I mean its a good explanation of all that supernatural stuff, but I think he may have been something like Big-foot or the Yeti. One of those ancient species that once existed in abundance but there are only a few survivors now.

Well he could be one of those too, but remember that his mother attacked after Grendel was killed (to answer your question why didn't more aliens attack), but he could also have been some fool that was just overgrown like that Goliath dude from the Bible. A spy or an enemy from another kingdom that was beaten by Hrothgar.

I think the spy thing works better. A rival nation could have sent their goliath warrior to kill Hrothgars warriors at night. That way it would weaken Hrothgar's army. Grendel's mother could have been maybe his wife or something.
Just a speculation though, I'm trying to find some info from more "official sources"

Yeah. A tribe that wanted revenge from Hrothgar's war could have sent a big dude to attack the mead hall at night and taking out Hrothgar's best troops. Then when the time was right, they could start an invasion.

That theory sounds good, but the "old hag" thing is the only problem. Why would an old hag follow him, and live in a lake of all things. But of course, the lake thing could be an exageration.

The lake thing could be made up, since it was only Beowulf who went in there. He could have made something up that sounded cool, and here we are 1500 years later still talking about it lol

The spy thing sounds realistic, but if the part about the lake is true, then it may have been an alien, or some other species that we don't know about.

alright alright, so maybe he wasn't an alien. But he still could have been some type of Big-foot species.
